editorial: as i like

This series was shot in 2009 in Bogota, Colombia. I have portrayed various transgender during the complex and lengthy preparation before their transvestites shows. They share a big colonial house in Bogota and they do trans shows in many Colombian cities.

The transition from one sex to another begins with the disguise, then plastic surgery allows surprising anatomical synthesis. The body is born naked, the rest is disguise, surgery and chemical aids that allow transgender to bring down the barrier between man and woman to become idols of sex, transgression and diversity.

In a world where masculinity and femininity seem to mix and merge, transgender become the symbol of sexual anarchy: a living example of the dynamism of the concept of gender. The definitions of man and woman are not sufficient to describe the complex reality of beings that live out their desires, emotions and attractions subverting the established rules and categories. Passing from one sex to another, transgender embody the platonic myth of the androgen, a being that contains both sexes and evokes the supreme perfection. As in the myth of Plato, separation is perceived as a loss and the choice of a single sexuality is a wound, a mutilation.

The current situation of transgender in Colombia is an invisible tragedy. Abuses, discriminations, violences against members of this community and their defenders are committed on a daily basis, by the illegal armed groups as well as the army.
